Until the - of a fixed calender in the 4th century, this day was celebrated with special offerings, a festive meal and the horn was blown to announce the new month. Women since the Talmudic times until the 18th century continued to observe and celebrate this day; Rashi quotes the Megilla 22b: as the reward for not participating in building the Golden Calf, women have limited work duties on Rosh Chodesh. With the Womens Movement since the 1970s, Jewish women revived the Rosh Chodesh celebration and worked on bringing the “Shekhina” and texts about the “levana” (another word for moon) into mainstream liturgy. We will celebrate the - of the new month with traditional as well as new songs, prayers and blessings, study together and/or do some creative activities. We will have a meal together and learn about each other as women of different backgrounds. This is a joint project from Bet Mishpachah and Hill Havurah, a family oriented community on Capitol Hill. The group is currently open to all interested women; you do not have to be a member in any synagogue.
