“You Had Me At Shalom,” an evening of same-sex Jewish speed dating

On January 31, 2009, the Washington DCJCC’s program for Gay & Lesbian Outreach and Engagement (GLOE) hosted the program “You Had Me At Shalom,” an evening of same-sex Jewish speed dating-the first ever such event in the DC area. The event drew a large crowd, with 126 registered participants, who were pre-matched on a variety of factors, such as age and religious preferences, which varied widely-from 21 to 60, from Orthodox to “Jewish in Spirit.” Our very own Yenta entered the scene with her Brooklyn-accented injunctions to “Eat, eat! Otherwise, you’ll be too thin and your date won’t even see ya at the table!”

Everyone went on eight dates of eight minutes each; the daters, drinks and date cards in hand, talked loudly and enthusiastically with their dates throughout the evening. Yenta went around placing breath mints on the tables-“First impressions are everythin’, honey, and as lovely as the falafel are tonight, they’re better in your stomach than on your breath, ya know,” she reminded the daters as she flounced around in her brightly-colored sequined dress that only a true Yenta could pull off.

At the end of the evening, daters turned in their Date Cards, and two days later, all received a personal email with the contact information for any matches they had from the evening to set up a second date-and hopefully many more!

GLOE coordinates dozens of programs every year for LGBTQ Jews in the DC Metro area. Coming up is the LGBTQ Passover Seder, hosted at the HRC Equality Center on April 1, 2009, where we will celebrate the large strides that the LGBT community has made over the past thirty years and recognize the work yet to be done for full liberation. Last year’s seder sold out, so buy your tickets early!
